Women's Self Defense and Help Center
(Women's) Self defense refers to actions taken by a person
to defend oneself, one's property or one's home.(Women's) Self defense
is a set of verbal, psychological, and physical techniques you can use
to defend yourself in situations ranging from unwanted or harassing comments
to physical abuse and rape. Self defense is also about how we feel about
ourselves because that self image shows itself to other people.
All women live with a certain level of risk of violent crime. Statistics
show that a woman now 21 years old has a 1 in 4 chance of experiencing
a violent crime in her lifetime. For them, much information is already
available about how to reduce their risk ("stay alert") and
how to respond if something bad happens ("fight back").
Some women are at an unusually high risk than others of serious assault
or even murder. Turning you local evening news will unfortunately confirm
this sad truth. Every month or so you hear of a woman assaulted or even
murdered by an ex spouse or ex boyfriend or just some crazy person. Tragically,
most of these abuses or murdered could have been prevented.
Shelters and other programs offer much information on personal security
matters, ranging from what to pack in an "emergency get-away bag"
to how to go into hiding. That is good and useful information, because
it is always better to avoid a violent attack than to try to survive one.
But hiding doesn't always work, and someone else can't be there to protect
you every minute of the day and night.
Ladies the Bottom Line is YOU are Responsible for YOUR Own Well Being,
Helping Yourself
Sometimes, violence comes despite the best possible avoidance measures,
and when it does, there is often no opportunity to summon help. In those
cases, a woman is forced to face her attacker alone, using only her own
resources and knowledge to survive. Fortunately, women who are properly
trained and confident in their ability to protect themselves can do so
quite effectively.
To be able to defend oneself, it is important to self train or take a
self defense training class to help with everyday assertiveness and boundary-setting
as well as preparing you to fight back in physical attacks. A typical
women's self defense training incorporates an understanding of the kinds
of violence most often experienced by women and the common social and
psychological barriers women face in learning to fight back. Women learning
self defense gain both physical and verbal
Self defense skills and the will to use them against an attacker.
Self defense classes also give women a rare opportunity to explore the
broad spectrum of emotions that often arise when we start to understand
the level of violence in our society. It is an excellent vehicle for exploring
anger, grief, and fear, and for tapping into the joy that comes from finding
your voice and discovering your own internal power.
Stressing preventive measures and repetitive drilling is a good approach
to women's self defense. Everyone has a sixth sense, that very loud alarm
that goes off in the back of your head. Statistics show that a very high
percentage of women that have been assulted knew something was wrong,
knew something wasn't quite right, knew the situation they were in was
a little odd. That was your sixth sense saying "get out of there."
It is our belief that the most powerful self defense is knowledge and
knowing how to deploy your abilities appropriately and at the right time.
Self defense comes in different forms:
1. Physical self defense knowledge area
a.Weapons knowledge
b.Martial Arts
2.Verbal self defense knowledge area
a.De-escalation of a verbal fight
3. Environmental Security knowledge area
a.maintaining a physical environment that will deter would be intruders
To determine whether to deploy physical or verbal self defense in a given
situation demands having the overall knowledge, ability and confidence
as to the best option or combination of options to use.
