This kayak compass (By Suunto) is easy to mount with rubber housing
and plastic adapter with screw set that mounts onto any flush surface. The Suunto®
Orca compass is designed to fit kayaks of varying shapes and sizes. Durable
thermoplastic rubber housing will withstand severe weather and rough conditions.
Includes elastic bungee cord & clips for quick installation. Mesh storage
pouch. The compass is Shock proof and has a luminous capsule, allowing you to
get your bearings at night. It is readable even when your boat and compass are
tilted at angles of upto 30 degrees.
Ideal for kayaks, dinghies and other smaller sail boats. The durable vibration
dampening housing and luminous dial also make this device a favorite among kayakers
and power-boaters.
Dont take uneccesar chances with hand held devices while you are exploring the
coastal waters or the 'fingers' of your local lake. It's so easy to install
and remove for transport that there's no reason you shouldn't have it with you
all the time.
One customer states "the visibility of this compass is really good. It
hooks nicely onto the kayak straps.the quality is there. Solid materials."
"The Orca was a great solution for me. I am a die hard kayak enthusiast
and I wanted something that was very well damped and much more stable than a
handheld compass.I found this compass, which a this price, I think is a steal.
The direction it provides is clear and easy to read. The straps can be adjusted
with ease that allowed me to wrap them firmly around the yoke. .So this is the
price, this is a worthy investment. A must have for your outdoor water trips."
"Unless your sea kayak has a built in compass, you really owe it to yourself
to look into a deck-mount compass like this one. Having a hand-held compass
in your PFD pocket is certainly a good thing. And, I always do carry one along
as a backup. However, once you've established a course that you're going to
paddle, a deck-mount compass is by far the best way to constantly make sure
that you're moving in the right direction. And, this Suunto deck-mount compass
is quite a nice one. There is at least one other out there from another manufacturer
whose name I can't remember; and, the feature set of these compasses really
do not vary much from company to company. I've used this Suunto for a couple
of years now and it's been great.
It mounts easily to the deck in front of the cockpit using bungie cords. You
place it essentially wherever you want to. As you are paddling along, you just
take a quick glance at any time to make sure you are paddling on the right heading.
Simple. However, also do yourself a favor and get some training in sea kayak
navigation. Take a class through your local sea kayak club. At least read one
of the many books out there on the topic. AND PRACTICE!!! Practice in good conditions
so that when you do get completely surrounded by fog some day, the techniques
are burned into your brain" (review by stw63's, Epinions).
