WHAT IS A STUN GUN ?
On the old "Star Trek" series, Captain Kirk and his crew
never left the ship without their trusty phasers. One of the coolest things
about these weapons was the  "stun"
setting. Unless things were completely out of control (as they frequently
were), the Enterprise crew always stunned their adversaries, rendering
them temporarily unconscious, rather than killing them.
We're still a ways off from this futuristic weaponry, but millions of
police officers, soldiers and ordinary citizens do carry real-life stun
weapons to protect against personal attacks.
A Stun gun is a legal electrical self defense device that puts out
a high voltage shock. By merely touching a person with the stun gun, he
or she is immobilized for several minutes with no permanent harm. Stun
guns are legal in all but a few states and no license or permit is required
to carry It. It is considered reasonable force to resist attack and can
be carried concealed or unconcealed. Conventional stun guns have a fairly
simple design as shown on the left. They are about the size of a flashlight,
and they work on ordinary 9-volt batteries.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
As mentioned earlier, the stun gun uses a nickel cadmium rechargeable
battery or nicad that is self-contained and rated at 9 volts. Through
solid state microchip circuitry, it takes the 9-volt potential and steps
it up in two transformer stages to between 50,000 to over 200,000 volts. Through
high-technology, the battery's 0.3 ampere current is reduced to a non
lethal 0.06 milliamps. The high voltage, low current charge is stored
in the capacitors bank until One merely has to push the release switch
and the charge is pulsed at a low frequency and is released swiftly through
the twin probed electrodes into the attacker's body, which will disrupt
the assaillant's neural and muscle function .
The energy stored in the capacitors is dumped into the assailant's muscles
at a pulse frequency rate that tells the muscles to do a great deal of
work very rapidly, thus making the muscles work furiously, but not in
an efficient manner. The muscles that take the charge work extremely hard,
but not together. This is compared with doing exercise in a very violent
manner, but the stun gun causes this to happen in a matter of seconds.
When applied against an adversary, the stun gun delivers 0.35 joules of
energy.
In addition to its physical effect, the stun gun can serve as an effective
psychological intimidator. When the stun gun is engaged, and it is not
touching the assailant, a charge of electricity is sent crackling between
the two test probes just below the shock probes. The sight of this blue
arc sparking and the sound of the live electrical current flow enhances
the assailant's natural fear of electricity. This alone may cause a possible
assailant to seek another course or get away from the storm before the
lightning strikes.
EFFECTS OF THE STUN GUN:
The stun gun works on the neural and muscular system. The maximum
electrical shocking power is well below the borderline shock range, which
has been scientifically established at 5 milliamps at 60 cycles per second'
similar to that of a house hold current Because the typical stun gun at
3 milliamps and at a much lower pulse frequency, it is regarded safe.
The device has a very insignificant effect on the human heart.

STUN EFFECTIVENESS
In general, the effects of the stun gun on an assailant will depend
on the size and fitness of the assailant. The stun guns works just as good through
clothing as the naked body. So that is a none consideration. Generally, half a second will
startle an assailant, giving some pain muscle contraction and shock. One
to two seconds will cause muscle spasms and a dazed mental state. Three
to five (3 to 5) seconds will cause loss of balance and muscle control,
total mental confusion and disorientation leaving the assailant dazed.
So when using a stun gun, always remember that it is meant as a deterrent
to give you time to run and/or call for help. Do not try to take over
the situation by yourself! Find or call for help
The stun gun does not rely on high amperage or pain for
results. The stun gun is designed to key into the nervous system . It
interrupts the tiny neurological impulses that travel through the body
to control and direct voluntary muscle movement. When an assailants neuromuscular
system is overwhelmed and controlled by the stun gun, instant disorientation
and loss of balance occur. The assailant usually remains in a dazed, disoriented,
passive condition for several minutes after contact has ceased.
